AI in the Wild 💡

• OpenAI has announced its long-rumored model, often codenamed ‘Strawberry’ or ‘Q*’. The new models o1 & o1-mini are supposedly much better at long-term reasoning than previous counterparts. o1 reportedly scored 83% on the qualifying exam for the International Mathematics Olympiad, compared with 13% for GPT-4o. - source

• AI journalists are in Hawaii! One Wired reporter writes about his experience seeing his old job, presenting local HI news, being phased it out in favor of AI news presenters, as ‘The Garden Island’ becomes the first local paper to adopt the tech for news presentation. - source

• Researchers at Howard Hughes Medical Institute are hoping that they can discover new breakthroughs in AI by studying the brain of fruit fly. By adopting some of the computational strategies found in a living brain, researchers hope to reduce the power intake of hungry artificial intelligence systems like ChatGPT. - source

• An unprecedented attack occurred across Lebanon yesterday when thousands of pagers connected to Hezbollah simultaneously exploded throughout the nation. Hezbollah has since announced that they’ve retaliated against Israel for the attack. Israel has a history of setting the global standard when it comes to cyber attacks, though the nation has likewise increasingly been the target of cyber attacks primarily from Iranian backed groups. - source
  

• Trump was the subject of a second potential assassination attempt. According to initial reporting, the would-be assassin was a Trump supporter in 2016 who became disillusioned with the President following his perceived support of Russia in the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian conflict. Trump has said “only consequential presidents get shot at”. - source
  

• Rupert Murdoch is embroiled in a familial legal battle over control of NewsCorp, the leading conservative-leaning media outlet behind Fox News. Murdoch hopes to keep control of the company in the hands of his eldest son, with reports suggesting that his other children would seek to move NewsCorp further to the left. - source
