• Anthropic announced a groundbreaking update: ‘computer use’, currently in beta. For the first time, developers can direct an AI model to take control of a computer - moving the cursor, inputting text, and interacting with the end user’s OS directly. - source
  

• The US is reportedly set to release a new set of rules to ban certain U.S. investments in artificial intelligence in China. The rules, which stem from an executive order signed by President Biden late last year, would also require US investors to notify the Treasury Department when investing in sensitive AI technologies. - source

• Google DeepMind is open-sourcing tech to detect & watermark GenAI text. The tool, SynthID, is part of a larger toolset designed to detect & watermark AI imagery, video, etc. - source

• A trove of 2,500+ ancient silver pennies discovered by amateur metal detectorists has been sold in the UK for more than £4.3 million, the highest-value sale ever for ‘treasure hunters’ in the nation. The coins, which are estimated to date from the years 1066-68, were purchased by the UK’s South West Heritage Trust. - source
  

• A 28-year-old Greek man was convicted to a one-month prison sentence after repeatedly breaking into his neighbors’ homes to smell their shoes. We smell a great Halloween couples’ costume idea. - source
